Ruoms
15km from St Germain is Ruoms. In this old town, you can see two fortified gates giving access to the outside, its ramparts built during the Hundred Years War with seven round towers that you will see when you pass by rue des tourelles.
You will also be able to admire some very beautiful houses with magnificent mullioned windows from the 15th and 16th centuries.
Ruoms is also known for its quarries, which were still being exploited fifty years ago (many monuments were built with Ruoms limestone) and also for its breweries, which have been closed for over 50 years.
But beer has been replaced by wine and Ruoms is home to the largest wine cooperative in the Ardèche and its wine museum, Néovinum, which you can visit.
Moreover, every year in August, the Ardèche winegrowers organise a big wine festival.
On your way back, don't miss the right bank of the Ardèche to admire the marvellous panorama of the Ruoms defiles.
This road starts with a succession of tunnels and vaults and overlooks the gorges of the Ardèche and the Ligne.
